West Bengal BJP State President & Union Minister Dr. Sukanta Majumdar and BJP National Spokesperson & MP Dr. Sambit Patra jointly addressed a press conference at the party’s headquarters, on Friday. During the conference, they strongly condemned CM Mamata Banerjee for rejecting the Supreme Court’s observations on the West Bengal teacher recruitment scam and opposing the court’s verdict. Dr. Patra, citing moral grounds, demanded Mamata Banerjee’s resignation and asserted that the people of Bengal must stand together against her autocratic, Taliban-like rule.
Dr. Patra stated that historic decisions are being made under the Modi government, with parliamentary sessions running through the night. The issue being addressed in today’s press conference has been relentlessly fought for on the ground by West Bengal BJP President and Union Minister Shri Sukanta Majumdar, who has also appealed for justice. Everyone is well aware of the situation in Bengal, the corruption, the oppression under Mamata Didi’s rule. Today, not just India but the entire world is witnessing it.
BJP National Spokesperson Dr. Patra highlighted that recently, during her visit to Oxford University, CM Mamata Banerjee declared, “I am a tigress.” But a true tigress is never involved in corruption. A tigress does not prey on her own people. A true leader never exploits their own citizens for personal gain, and does not push them into misery. Under Mamata Banerjee’s governance, corruption has flourished in Bengal, and now, millions are bearing the brunt of it.
Dr. Patra stated that the Supreme Court has remarked on the school recruitment scam that took place in Bengal between 2016 and 2021. During this period, teaching and non-teaching staff positions were vacant, attracting approximately 23 to 24 lakh applicants. Between 2016 and 2021, more than 25,780 teachers and non-teaching staff were recruited. The corruption in this process was so extensive that many people took the matter to court. This scam became widely known in Bengal as the ‘Bribe-for-Job Scam’ or the School Recruitment Scam.
BJP National Spokesperson Dr. Patra emphasized that on April 22, 2024, the Calcutta High Court delivered a decisive ruling, declaring that the recruitment process for these 25,780 appointments was flawed and deeply corrupt. Bribes were taken, and OMR sheets were deliberately destroyed to erase evidence of genuine merit, ensuring that undeserving candidates were pushed to higher ranks. Those who were not toppers were fraudulently placed at the top. Even those who failed the exam or left their OMR sheets blank were granted appointments in exchange for bribes.
Dr. Patra said that On April 22, 2024, the Calcutta High Court issued a clear directive to cancel these appointments, restart the recruitment process, and, most importantly, conduct a CBI investigation. At that time, Mamata Banerjee and her associates fiercely opposed the CBI and ED, making baseless statements and attempting to prevent the CBI from entering Bengal. Wherever the INDI alliance holds power, corrupt leaders work together to block investigative agencies. They won’t allow the CBI to enter Karnataka or Bengal. In Congress-ruled states or INDI alliance-governed regions, the CBI is deliberately kept out. It is only because they want to plunder, engage in corruption, and commit fraud without consequences. They carry out these crimes boldly.
BJP National Spokesperson Dr. Patra stated that yesterday, the Supreme Court delivered its final verdict, with a bench led by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar. When the High Court had issued its ruling, 126 applicants, including the West Bengal government, approached the Supreme Court, seeking to overturn the decision. The West Bengal government argued that the High Court’s judgment was incorrect, claiming, ‘This court is trying to dismantle our education system, so its order should be dismissed.’ At that time, the Supreme Court granted a stay order, leading to a detailed investigation into the matter. Finally, yesterday, the two-judge bench of Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar pronounced their verdict. A part of the order states, “We have gone through the facts regarding the findings of this case. The entire selection process is vitiated by manipulation and fraud. Credibility and legitimacy have been deluded.” DR. Patra said that the West Bengal government and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s credibility and legitimacy have been completely dismantled. This is not a statement from the BJP but the verdict of the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court also stated, “No reason to interfere in the High Court's judgment. Tainted candidates must be terminated. Appointments were the result of cheating and fraud.” Nearly 23 to 24 lakh young men and women dedicated themselves to studying day and night, aspiring to become teachers or join as non-teaching staff to build their futures. However, in reality, candidates were made to pay anywhere between ₹5 lakh to ₹15 lakh or even more for these positions. The Supreme Court has declared that those who secured jobs through bribery must be removed.
Dr. Patra stated that if even a district court had made such remarks about any other Chief Minister, there would have been a massive uproar. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi would have stormed into Parliament in his pajamas and T-shirt, claiming that democracy was in danger and had been murdered, demanding the Chief Minister’s arrest, and calling them a dictator. Where is Rahul Gandhi today? Where is the INDI Alliance now? In Haryana, a former Chief Minister was jailed over similar recruitment scams, and Didi will meet the same fate. India is a nation where the rule of law stands strong, and once the BJP forms the government in Bengal, the full force of law will come upon Mamata Banerjee. As per the law, morality, and the Constitution, those who have destroyed the lives of thousands, caused immense suffering, and subjected people to harassment will be put behind bars.
BJP National Spokesperson Dr. Patra pointed out the suffering of thousands, questioning how many teachers and employees are facing devastation due to the recent developments. With nearly 26,000 individuals set to lose their jobs, the impact on their lives is unimaginable. He attributed this crisis to corruption and mismanagement of Mamata Banerjee’s government, which has left lakhs of people in distress. Since salaries of 25,750 affected individuals would now be stopped, it would be appropriate for the ruling party in West Bengal to take responsibility. Funds from the TMC or the CM Relief Fund should be utilized to support them.
Dr. Patra emphasized that CM Mamata Banerjee has cited ‘humanitarian grounds’ to justify her refusal to accept the Supreme Court’s verdict. The BJP urges the Supreme Court to take Suo motu cognizance of this matter and initiate contempt of court proceedings against Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress government. Raising concerns over such defiance of judicial authority, he questioned whether any Chief Minister could afford to openly dismiss a Supreme Court order. Such actions raised serious questions about governance and accountability and reflected a worrying trend of disregard for democratic institutions.
BJP National Spokesperson Dr. Patra said that the people of Bengal must unite against CM Mamata Banerjee’s Taliban-style dictatorial rule. When Partha Chatterjee was arrested in 2022 as the state's Education Minister, others taken into custody included MLA Manik Bhattacharya, MLA Jeevan Krishna Shah, TMC leader Shantanu Kundu, and Kuntal Ghosh. In his arrest memo, Partha Chatterjee wrote, "Your guardian and your relatives," referring to the one he worked for. In his own handwriting, he wrote, "Mamata Banerjee, Amar Guardian"—meaning Mamata Banerjee was his guide. If she was the mentor, the one who led the way, and under whose instructions he committed this scam, then while Partha Chatterjee is in jail, why isn’t Didi behind bars?
Dr. Patra displayed a picture of Partha Chatterjee, in which a woman named Arpita Mukherjee was seen standing beside him. Arpita Mukherjee was his associate, and during two raids, the ED recovered a total of ₹49 crore from her house. Showing a picture of Partha Chatterjee with Mamata Banerjee, he said that guidance was being taken from the guide herself. Partha is asking, "What should I do, Didi?" and Didi is saying, "Do all the scams and deposit the money in TMC." They have squandered the hard-earned money of the people in such a way that even if we sweep our homes, we won’t find as many papers as the currency notes recovered from him. This is the blood and sweat of those 24 lakh applicants. Mamata Banerjee has no right to remain in power anymore. She must step down from the chair.
BJP National Spokesperson Dr. Patra took a dig at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, saying firstly, the leader who repeatedly speaks of "Maa, Maati, Manush" should step down immediately on moral grounds as one major scam after another is being exposed under her rule. Secondly, the Mamata government is responsible for paying the salaries and financial compensation to those who are being dismissed by the administration, as this mistake occurred due to flaws in the government’s appointment system. Thirdly, Mamata Banerjee might now attempt to create communal tension or an atmosphere of fear in Bengal to divert public attention from this scam, forcing people to focus on their safety instead. This issue is not just about Bengal but raises serious questions about the politics and administration of the entire nation. Shri Patra emphasized that the people have awakened, and Mamata Banerjee and her party must understand that power is not permanent. Now, they will have to vacate the chair—because the people are coming. People have awakened, and Mamata Banerjee and her party must understand that power is not permanent. Now, they will have to vacate the chair—because the people are coming.
Union Minister Dr. Sukanta Majumdar stated that following the Supreme Court’s ruling, Mamata Banerjee appeared before the media and began her blame game, targeting everyone, accusing CPM leaders, and even questioning the judiciary and honorable judges. Through her remarks, she diminished the dignity of the Supreme Court, which could be considered contempt of court. TMC leaders who accepted bribes in exchange for jobs were protected by Mamata Banerjee. In schools where only 1,000 teachers were required, an additional 1,500 positions were created through a Cabinet decision, not to improve education but to safeguard those who had obtained jobs illegally. This was a calculated move involving the entire Cabinet. The BJP demands that since the Cabinet collectively decided to shield those involved in corruption, the Chief Minister and all responsible ministers should face legal consequences and be jailed. Those who orchestrated and facilitated such wrongdoing should not be allowed to remain free, as they knowingly worked to protect corruption at an institutional level.
Dr. Majumdar further stated that a total of approximately 25,753 appointments were made in this entire case, but not everyone among them is guilty. Not all had purchased jobs by paying money. Yesterday, after the Supreme Court’s order, hundreds of teachers were dismissed from their jobs, and the scene was extremely heartbreaking. This issue is extremely close to my heart because I got my first job through the School Service Commission exam, and my wife also became a government school teacher after passing the same exam. In Bengal, the teaching community has always enjoyed special respect in society, but Mamata Banerjee’s policies have deeply tarnished this dignity. Yesterday, when we saw university toppers and gold medalists in tears, a pressing question arose—how will they now pay their EMIs, support their families, and buy medicines for their elderly parents? If there is one person to be held responsible for this entire fiasco, it is Mamata Banerjee and her entire party.
West Bengal BJP President stated that the Calcutta High Court’s single bench had noted that around 5,000 individuals are suspected of securing jobs through bribery, while the remaining candidates are entirely qualified and honest, having earned their positions through hard work and merit. But Mamata Banerjee’s advisors suggested that she wanted to save herself and the TMC leaders who took bribes. By blending everyone into the same category, it would become difficult for the court to distinguish between the guilty and the innocent. And in such a scenario, the court might also conclude that what has happened should be left as it is. Now, with the Supreme Court's ruling delivered by a two-judge bench led by the Chief Justice of India, it is clear that Mamata Banerjee’s deception has been completely exposed before the court. However, we have one pressing question—what about the more than 20,000 honest youths who secured these jobs through sheer hard work, dedication, and a transparent process? They had nothing to do with this scam, yet their jobs are now being taken away.
Dr. Majumdar criticized the Trinamool Congress, stating that leaders who openly accepted bribes and sold government jobs, using the illicit money to build lavish malls and bungalows, are still freely walking around, evading justice. Is this what justice looks like? In West Bengal, everything has a price tag, whether it’s a teaching job, a government post, or even the right to extract sand from a river, as long as one is willing to pay. Mamata Banerjee has turned West Bengal into a mall.
West Bengal BJP President Dr. Majumdar stated that the BJP demands that the state government uphold constitutional principles and provide compensation to the rightful individuals through party funds or the CM Relief Fund. As illicit funds have gone to Trinamool Congress, they must be recovered. This is not a mere allegation, as concrete evidence exists in the form of an audio recording. There is an ongoing case in West Bengal linked to an individual known as ‘Kalighat ka Kaku’, identified as Jiban Krishna Bhadra. As per the audio recording, ₹25 crore was given to Parth, ₹20 crore to Abhishek, and a substantial sum to Manik Bhattacharya. This recording exposes the systematic distribution of corrupt funds. Everyone is aware of which Abhishek from TMC is being referred to. Abhishek Banerjee had previously stated that “If even a single piece of evidence is found against me, if corruption is proven, I will hang myself on the gallows.” Shri Majumdar questioned whether Abhishek is struggling to find a stage or if there’s another reason behind his silence. West Bengal has been plagued by one scam after another under Trinamool Congress rule, and now, corruption has reached an unprecedented level.
Dr. Majumdar stated that Mamata Banerjee must now step down from power. It would be better if she resigns on her own; otherwise, the people will remove her themselves. The time for Mamata Banerjee’s exit from power is fast approaching. The BJP's first demand is that compensation be provided to the deserving individuals from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund or the party’s funds. The second suggestion is for Mamata Banerjee’s government—to ensure justice for the more than 20,000 deserving candidates. The court has ruled that they must retake the exam after three months to prove their merit. However, this is highly unfair to teachers who have been teaching in schools since 2016. The exam is conducted at the graduate or master's degree level, whereas school-level teaching primarily involves classes from 11th, 12th, or even lower grades. This entire process is an injustice to the education system. The teachers who have been teaching since 2016 have academic backgrounds in subjects like Honors, B.A., B.Sc., M.Sc., and M.A. The BJP has a key demand for the Mamata Banerjee government—when these teachers appear for the SSC exam, those with 16 to 25 years of teaching experience should be awarded additional marks based on each year of experience. The SSC rules should be amended to allocate marks for every year of service, as experience holds significance in every recruitment process. For instance, when someone applies for the College Service Commission, they are asked about their years of teaching experience, and marks are awarded accordingly. I urge the government to implement necessary reforms in this regard and recognize teaching experience in the SSC recruitment process. We sympathize with all those teachers who are qualified and talented, who did not buy their jobs but earned them honestly. However, in the field of education—where the children of common people come to learn—there should be no compromise. Unfortunately, Mamata Banerjee has made a compromise in this matter. Therefore, a provision must be made to grant relief marks to eligible teachers appearing for the exam.
Union Minister DR. Sukanta Majumdar stated that lawyers and legal experts should be consulted. If a solution is possible under Article 146 or any other legal provision, it should be explored to secure the future of nearly 20,000 deserving teachers. These individuals have come a long way, yet Mamata Banerjee has plunged Bengal’s future into complete darkness. This is just the beginning—on the 8th, another case is set to open, as the Supreme Court’s stay order will be reconsidered. This hearing will determine the validity of the new positions created by the Cabinet. The BJP has full faith in India’s judiciary, and we firmly believe that the judiciary will punish those responsible for this corruption, who have played with Bengal’s future. India’s legal system will undoubtedly hold Mamata Banerjee and her government accountable for their wrongdoing. Former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala was imprisoned in a similar teacher recruitment scam. In India’s history, Mamata Banerjee could become the second Chief Minister to go to jail over a teacher recruitment scam. Yesterday, Mamata Banerjee said, "Do you want to send me to jail?" Mamata Didi now knows exactly what is going to happen to her. India's courts and judiciary will send her to jail for her misdeeds. If someone robs a house, one person suffers a loss. If someone illegally extracts and sells sand from a river, it harms thousands of residents and the state's revenue. But Mamata Banerjee has played with the education system of West Bengal for generations. If anyone is responsible for this, it is Mamata Banerjee, and she must be punished for it.
