Bharatiya Janata Party National Spokesperson Shri Pradeep Bhandari addressed a press conference at the party’s headquarters in New Delhi, on Saturday. During the conference, Shri Bhandari termed the violence in West Bengal over the Waqf Amendment Bill as state-sponsored. Shri Bhandari strongly criticized the West Bengal government and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, stating that anti-Hindu violence is taking place in West Bengal under the protection of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and she is actively encouraging this violence. He also said that under her rule, Hindus in Bengal are forced to approach the courts to celebrate Saraswati Puja, to take out Ram Navami processions, and even face attacks on Durga Puja pandals—yet, Mamata Banerjee blames the Hindus.
Shri Bhandari strongly criticized the West Bengal government, alleging that the ongoing targeted violence in the state is being encouraged and supported by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He claimed that the current wave of anti-Hindu violence in Bengal is thriving under her protection. Referring to the recently passed Waqf Amendment Bill, Shri Bhandari stated that it has been widely accepted across the country, with only a few peaceful protests. However, in West Bengal, he alleged, Mamata Banerjee is using the issue for appeasement politics. He stated that the land of Swami Vivekananda, Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, and Rabindranath Tagore has been turned into a laboratory of appeasement under Mamata Banerjee’s rule.
BJP National Spokesperson Shri Bhandari further pointed out that while peace prevails in Assam and in every other part of the country, violence is erupting only in West Bengal—because the Chief Minister is actively promoting it, the entire media is showing the scene where Siddiqullah Chowdhury, a close aide of Mamata Banerjee, openly said from a public stage that he received a call from Mamata Banerjee and that she was happy about it. On one hand, the police use batons and sticks against teachers because Mamata Banerjee has been exposed in the SSC scam. On the other hand, when targeted attacks happen on Hindus in areas like Malda, Murshidabad, Nadia, Jahangirpur, and others, the police remain silent. Even when stones are pelted at the police, they stay quiet. When there is an attack on the BDO office, even then the police remain silent, because the police have instructions from Mamata Banerjee to allow the violence to happen. Presenting an image of the violence that took place in Kolkata, Shri Bhandari said that the location where the incident occurred is right in the heart of Kolkata and near the ancestral home of Swami Vivekananda in North Kolkata. There, in a crowd, someone removed a saffron flag, yet Mamata Banerjee’s administration took no action. In Shamsherganj, a Hindu woman's shop is attacked, and Mamata Banerjee remains silent.
Shri Bhandari questioned West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, asking whether the safety and peace of Hindus in Bengal is not her responsibility. Law and order is a state subject, and Mamata Banerjee is directly responsible for it. More than 500 people gather on a railway track, yet Mamata Banerjee’s administration takes no action—because this is the chronology. Since Mamata Banerjee publicly stated on April 5 that she would oppose the Waqf Amendment Bill, her close minister Siddiqullah Chowdhury incited the crowd publicly and said that they have Mamata Banerjee’s protection. After independence, what Siddiqullah Chowdhury is doing today is exactly what Suhrawardy did before independence. Under Mamata Banerjee’s rule, Hindus in Bengal have to knock on the doors of the court to perform Saraswati Puja. They have to approach the court even to take out a Ram Navami procession, and attacks are carried out on Durga Puja pandals. Yet Mamata Banerjee blames the Hindus, because she has already stated that for her, Sanatan Dharma is dirty.
BJP National Spokesperson Shri Bhandari stated that today another big question arises — why has Mamata Banerjee’s administration and police not taken any action so far? Why haven’t the incidents of violence in Murshidabad been stopped? Because- Mamata Banerjee wants to send a message that she is turning Bengal into a laboratory of appeasement. Today, there is anger in the heart of every Bengali in Bengal and in every Indian across the country. Why is Mamata Banerjee committing this injustice? Violence erupts in Murshidabad on April 5, Siddiqullah Chowdhury talks about the violence in a Trinamool Congress meeting on April 8, violence happens again on April 9, and on April 10, people take to the streets in Kolkata. All of this clearly shows that Mamata Banerjee has lost the trust of the people in Bengal. To divert attention from the SSC scam, she is encouraging this violence. This is the same Mamata Banerjee about whom the Calcutta High Court, after the Hindu-targeted post-poll violence in 2021, had remarked that there is neither the rule of law nor peace in Bengal. Mamata Banerjee seems to have forgotten that it is her constitutional duty to ensure the safety of Hindus in Bengal — a duty in which she has completely failed.
Shri Bhandari stated that the incidents of violence currently unfolding in West Bengal are all supported and instigated by Mamata Banerjee herself. That is why the police have not taken any strict action so far. The country is witnessing how, on one hand, Mamata Banerjee's ministers make derogatory remarks about Hindus, and on the other hand, when attacks are being carried out on Hindus, Mamata Banerjee remains silent. The situation in Bengal is part of a well-planned conspiracy, and Mamata Banerjee is directly responsible for it. The Bharatiya Janata Party demands that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee take strict action to stop this violence and maintain law and order in Bengal. If she fails to do so, it will be clear that Mamata Banerjee is actively promoting violence.
