Resolution of the BJP Parliamentary Party Condemning the Muslim Appeasement steps of the UPA Government

Press Release
The Parliamentary Party of the BJP resolutely condemns the statement of the Prime Minister to the National Development Council that the minorities, in particular Muslims, have the first claim to the country’s resources.

The poorest of the poor have the first claim on the country’s resources – not a religious group as a religious group.

The statement of the Prime Minister is no accident. It is the latest step in a series by which the UPA Government is seeking to appease Muslims – irrespective of the injury that would be inflicted on the national interest, and indeed on the Muslims themselves.

    *        The shameful controversy that was deliberately stoked by it over the singing of the national song, Vande Matram;
    *        The reservations that the Congress Government in Andhra decreed for Muslims – and which were struck down as unconstitutional by the courts;
    *        The decision to institute a head count in the Defence Forces – a move so divisive and fatal that, for the first time in history, the Army Chief had to oppose it in public;
    *        The insistence on aiding and abetting Bangladeshi infiltration – in spite of the fact that Supreme Court has struck down the IMDT Act and the amendments rushed through by this Government to the Foreigners Act as being both unconstitutional and as jeopardizing the security of the country;
    *        The setting up of the Sachar Committee – with the patent objective of paving the way for extending reservations to Muslims;
    *        The statements made by high functionaries of the Congress and its backers for showing mercy to the perpetrator of the attack on India’s Parliament.

Each of these steps is part of a carefully thought out series – the sole objective of which is to somehow turn a vote bank towards themselves, irrespective of what it does to the country.

The country will never forget that it was partitioned by precisely this kind of communal appeasement. The statement of the Prime Minister – like each of these steps – is divisive and does incalculable harm to the national interest.

The so-called clarifications issued subsequently by his office and by his deputy in the Planning Commission confirm the country’s apprehension that the statement was no slip, that it was a deliberate and calculated limb of the same vote bank politics that has done so much harm to our country and society.

For these reasons, the BJP Parliamentary Party condemns the statement of the Prime Minister and the appeasement which it exemplifies.

We appeal to the country to see through the evil and cynical designs of the UPA Government, and to awaken to the grave harm they will do to the nation's security, unity and integrity.

We appeal to the Muslims also to see how they are being sought to be used once again as a mere vote bank, and how this will harm their own interests in the long run.

In the coming weeks the BJP will take up a nation-wide campaign to alert the country to the divisive and evil designs of this Government.
