New Delhi – 30 September 2008

I am deeply saddened by the news of a stampede early this morning at the Chamunda Devi Temple, situated on a hill top in the precincts of Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur, in which nearly 150 worshippers have lost their lives.

The joyous occasion of the beginning of the Navaratri festival has thus turned into a terrible tragedy.

I send my heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims.
