Press Statement issued by BJP National Spokesperson and MP 1. It is not only the apathy and indifference of the central government towards the feelings and aspirations of the people of Jammu region, but its support for the state's vegenceful reprisal of public agitation smacks of clear aparthied. The methods used by the state to crush the popular people's agitation against being the expression of public against is a clear testimony to such an attitude of aparthied. The situation in Jammu region is even worse than the days of emergency. While government is sensitive to the aspirations of people in the valley it is totally insensitive to the legitimate aspirations of the people of Jammu region. The BJP charges the government for the recent flare up of public anger and the resultant situation. The manner in which the police tried to cremate the body of Kuldeep Verma, a worker, who committed suicide to protest against the withdrawal of land granted to Amarnath Shrine Board and its justification by Omar Abdullah, who was cheered by the Prime Minister and Smt. Sonia Gandhi, is condemnable. His body was taken to Bisna village despite the request by his parents on 23rd July and was being burnt on tyres by sprinkling liquor and kerosene. This shameful and deplorable act infuriated locals, who then doused the fire and cremated the body with all religious rites in the presence of his parents and thousands of mourning people. The Police resorted to lathi charge and shelled tear gas without any provocation form the mob, who were assembled there to pay homage to Kuldeep in Jammu on 27 July, when the curfew was lifted. The police also arrested BJP stalwarts Chamanlal Gupta, Ashok Khajuria, Mayor Parvinder Gupta and convener of agitation Sh. Leelakaran Sharma. People of Jammu have observed Bandh from 30th June to 8th July and again from 23rd July to protest the government decision to withdraw allotted land to the Amarnath Board. All sections of society including Muslims, traders, farmers, senior citizens, women youth, labour are on street seeking reversal of the govt's unjustifiable. BJP demands that government takes cognizance of the massive peaceful agitation and reverses its decision on land. The BJP also condemns the 7 attacks that have taken place against Amarnath pilgrims during last one month. The attacks took place in Ganderwal, which happens to be constituency of Omar Abdullah, where even the modesty of women pilgrims was attacked. Pilgrims in Gulbarg, Dal lake, Sonmarg and other places also were targeted. The BJP wants to remind Congress and Omer Abdullah that hundreds of Hindu temples were burnt, destroyed and desecrated over last couple of decades in the valley. 2. BJP finds central government totally inadequate to fight inflation. Yet another hike in CRR and RR is a regressive step. It will not impact inflation but it will hit hard Aam Aadmi, who will have to pay increased EMIs and higher interest rates. Since April RBI has hiked 1.50% CRR taking away Rs. 54,000 crores of liquidity and has hiked 1.25% of RR, which has resulted in interest rates surging by 2% across the board. Inflation can not be contained by mere fiscal measures, but along with supply side management only government has failed on this vital aspect and even failed to target cartelisation in cement and steel. The much touted 1 million tonnes of edible oil import and its subsidised distribution has not happened. This is the worst betrayal of the poor. Government must come out with innovative measures like subsidised distribution of 5 essential food grains to all sections of society through PDS and flexible taxation on petro products. 3.
BJP takes serious note of observations made by Gowahati high court while
disposing the cases failed by illegal immigrants. It has said that "Bangladeshi
infiltrators have not only intruded into every hook and corner of Assam,
but have already become kingmakers." BJP demands that special drive for deportation of illegal immigrants should be taken up immediately. (Shyam
