I am deeply saddened by the demise of eminent industrialist Shri K.K. Birla in Kolkata early this morning.

Shri Birla was a multi-faceted personality. A businessman who belonged to the legendary Birla Family, he was also a parliamentarian, philanthropist and media personality. As the owner of the Hindustan Times group of publications, he made a distinctive contribution to the development of the Indian media.

I had the privilege of knowing Shri Birla for many years. Over these years, I had developed great respect and fondness for him as a thorough gentleman. I offer my heartfelt condolences to his daughter Smt. Shobhna Bhartiya and other members of his bereaved family.
